Cape Gooseberry also known as Ground Cherry, Husk Cherry, Husk Tomato or Golden Berry originated in South America but were very popular in South Africa and get their name from having been grown around the Cape of Good Hope area. They are golden orange in color with a tan husk.
Stores well up to 3 months in the husk. The flavor is tart and citrus like. You can use these fruits raw or cooked in pies, cakes, jellies, jams and as a raisin substitute also not as sweet.
