Luffa is a trellis crop, grown mainly for young fruits, which are harvested as vegetables. These gourds can reach anywhere from 6 inches to 2½ feet long, and about 4 to 7 inches in diameter. When the fruit is fully matured, it is very fibrous. When the fruit is ripened, it is used to make scrubbing sponges for bathing, washing dishes or other household cleaning. This is why luffa is also referred to as sponge gourd.
